FBI file on Pablo Picasso
The FBI, under its director John Edgar Hoover, compiled thousands of secret files on US and non-US citizens deemed to be a threat to the State. This ranged from civil rights activists such as Martin Luther King Jr. to intellectuals, musicians and artists, including Pablo Picasso (File No: 100-337396). These secret, confidential and heavily redacted files were the product of Cold War ideology and the anti-communism of McCarthyism. US institutions, including museums and cultural agencies, were caught up in resultant processes of surveillance, paranoia and self-censorship.
