This text explores pressing cultural questions addressed by intellectuals, activists and artists engaged with critical responses to military and political conflicts related to the attacks on the World Trade Center, New York, and the Pentagon, Washington D.C. on September 11, 2001. These conflicts include the US-led “War on Terror” and invasion of Iraq in 2003. The main case study is an art installation titled Afflicted Powers by Retort — a San Francisco-based group —exhibited at the Second International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville, 2006 (BIACS 2).
